2016 performances – a moving journey for the senses

Introductory marathon through numerous locations in Vienna.
A garden of delights and a mystical mountain made of salt. Dance fireworks to David Byrne’s guitar sounds and a flamenco body in fervid playfulness. From Europe’s ancestor to the Vikings, the slave traders and the partisan forests in Yugoslavia. Dancelike eruptions then and now. Welcome to ImPulsTanz 2016.

“Freedom, equality, solidarity – no more than abstract words that disintegrate in our mouths like rotten mushrooms?” is how the Viennese Hugo von Hofmannsthal described this feeling in 1902. On July 14, 2016, the anniversary of the French Revolution, the great choreographer Maguy Marin, who was recently awarded a Golden Lion in Venice for her life’s work, will open the 2016 ImPulsTanz festival with her powerful new work.

With international highlights, an art & dance focus and the awarding of the Casinos Austria Prix Jardin d’Europe to young artists from the [8:tension] series, the performance program promises fascinating insights into the endless facets of dance and performance.

Workshops and research

The beat sets the tone.
The 250 workshops and research projects at ImPulsTanz at the Vienna Arsenal are sure to thrill every dance fan. International and Austrian greats, among them New York house dance legend Sekou Heru and nuevo flamenco dancer Marco de Ana, will transform the dance studio into a club and a Spanish bodega.

ImPulsTanz will hold around 90 workshops just for beginners of all age groups. Among them will be many new faces and styles. The spectrum ranges from urban dance with Helmut Fixl and Marie-Christin Scherzer to a mix of house dancing fitness training to burn off energy, all the way to trance and slash for African music, and lots more still.

Your journey – your yoga!
The bodywork department promises one thing about all: improving your every day quality of life and getting to know your own body.

ImPulsTanz is dedicating a special focus to contact improvisation. In addition to workshops such as one by Ray Chung, in which improvisation technique meets martial arts, discussions, jams and performances will invite the audience to think and move together.

The activities on offer for people with and without disabilities will expand by four new courses. Moreover, together with Alito Alessi, ImPulsTanz is offering a one-month training to become a certified DanceAbility teacher – registration is currently open.

SHAKE THE BREAK!
Together with DSCHUNGEL WIEN, ImPulsTanz will rock the summer holidays. At the 16 workshops for children and youth between four and 20 years of age, Mamadou M’Baye will tell stories and Conny Aitzetmueller will train pole spinning.
