Top 5 Christmas Markets in Vienna

Christmas in Vienna

The Christmas market season is here!

The first Christmas markets in Vienna will open in two weeks. Are you unable to wait any longer, or do you think it is too early? Whatever your opinion, I wish to introduce you to my top Christmas markets. You have time to visit them all!

***** Arts and Crafts Market at Karlsplatz
**** Christmas Village at the Altes AKH
*** Old Viennese Christmas Market on the Freyung
** Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace
* Christmas Village in front of Belvedere Palace

Arts and Crafts Market at Karlsplatz

The Christmas market at Karlsplatz, located right in front of St. Charles’s Church, is my personal favorite Christmas market. What differentiates it from others is everything it has on offer. You won’t find any junk stands here—only genuine arts and crafts. Moreover, the square is very broad, such that you won’t be crushed during peak times. Like every year, in the center of the square, there’s knee-deep straw in which children, and even adults, can build straw castles. (If you do so, waterproof pants are decidedly advantageous.) While the kids are playing, you can enjoy punch or mulled wine unhurriedly and always have an overview of everything.

Christmas Village at the Altes AKH

Located in the courtyard of the Altes AKH, this Christmas market truly has a village character. The stands are built along the paths and there is food and drink at the village square.

Old Viennese Christmas Market on the Freyung

You can best combine the Old Viennese Christmas Market with a stroll through the 1st District’s shopping streets, which are beautifully lighted during Christmas time: the Kohlmarkt and the Graben.

Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace

With its gorgeous location, the Christmas market in front of Schönbrunn Palace wins a definitive place on my list. Combine your visit with a walk through the wintery palace park, then treat yourself to an extra snack or drink.

Christmas Village in front of Belvedere Palace

This Christmas market also belongs to the group of “Christmas villages.” It’s almost an insiders’ tip and not so overcrowded like other markets. Moreover, you can reach the Arts and Crafts Market at Karlsplatz on foot from here. With this combination you’ll enjoy a varied Christmas market afternoon!
