Mamma Mia – an old lady is coming for a visit!
Two new musical productions are already waiting for us in Vienna in 2014
Musicals have a long tradition in Vienna. Two theaters of the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien (United Stages Vienna) continuously show all kinds of musical productions. For the musical “Elisabeth“, which has been performed the longest and has returned to Vienna for a brief guest performance after a long absence, the curtains closed for the final time this past Saturday. Musical fans can immediately look forward to two Austrian premieres, at the Ronacher Theater starting in February and at the Raimund Theater starting in March.
Musical thriller at the Ronacher Theater
I’m especially looking forward to “Der Besuch der alten Dame – Das Musical“, based on Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s tragicomedy, which will celebrate its Austrian premiere at the Ronacher Theater on February 19, 2014.
Artistic Director Christian Struppeck promises a suspense-filled, modern musical thriller – “a piece of world literature which to this day has not lost its timeliness.”
For actors, the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien were able to win the musical star couple Pia Douwes and Uwe Kröger after a long absence. They will be onstage together for a production for the first time again since “Elisabeth”. Hearing both of these unmistakable voices in Vienna again will make many musical lovers happy.
A brief synopsis:
The billionaire Claire Zachanassian returns to her poverty-stricken native city of Güllen (lit. “to manure” in German) after a decades-long absence and announces a donation of two billions euros to the citizens – under one condition: the death of her former lover Alfred III. The morals are appalling in the beginning, though this part doesn’t last long and people start buying on credit and the manhunt begins.
Musical comedy at the Raimund Theater
For those who prefer less dramatic theater, I recommend the Raimund Theater. Starting on March 19, 2014, the musical comedy “Mamma Mia!” will be given its Austrian premiere.
The musical, which has long since become a cult, has been performed nonstop at London’s West End for 15 years and on New York’s Broadway for 12 years. Maybe you know the Hollywood film version with Meryl Streep from 2008? If so, you know what awaits you:
Greece – a mother – a daughter – three possible father – a marriage!
A brisk, brash and bright musical evening for the whole family. And with 23 of ABBA’s greatest hits, nothing can go wrong!
