Easter egg hunting in Vienna
The Easter market at the Freyung
If you’re in downtown Vienna within the next two weeks, drop by the Freyung. The Easter market is taking place there between 23 March and 9 April.
The square in front of the Schottenkirche, lined with several city palaces as well as the Bank Austria Kunstforum, is famous for its markets, especially the old Viennese Christmas marketand the Easter market. More than forty exhibitors present Easter arts and crafts and culinary delights.
Europe’s largest egg mountain
What’s special about the Easter market at the Freyung – a real eye-catcher for me time and again – is located in the middle of the square. A gigantic array of decorated eggs, sorted by color, piled up in egg cartons, form “Europe’s largest egg mountain.” What seems like millions of eggs make selecting from among them a difficult task. From quail eggs to ostrich eggs—you’ll find everything for your Easter decorations here.
The Easter market is open daily between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM.
Organic farmers’ market
At the same time as the Easter market, you can shop across the street at the organic farmers’ market stands. As an exception, the market is open continuously from 30 March to 7 April; otherwise it is open only on Fridays and Saturdays.
If you still have time and the inclination, at “Am Hof” right around the corner there’s another Easter market, where arts and crafts are on offer.
That’s the way how playing Easter bunny is lots more fun!
I can hardly wait to see how I’m going to expand my Osterstrauch this year.
(Osterstrauch: a German and Austrian Easter tradition in which a branch or small tree—the “Osterstrauch”—is decorated with hollowed-out eggs.)
