ImpulsTanz 2017

One month in the name of dance

It began in a small setting in 1984, and today it is one of the most important and largest festivals of modern dance worldwide. The ImPulsTanz Festival will take place once again in Vienna from July 13 through August 13, 2017. Well-known international dance professionals, choreographers and speakers will meet in Vienna, work together and share their passion for dance with spectators, visitors, workshop participants and fans from all over the world. The enthusiasm can hardly fail to move you, such concentrated joie de vivre and the joy of movement in many varieties will motivate you to participate – or at least to watch, which is every bit as welcome.

2017 performances

63 first-rate productions (among them 12 world premieres) are on the program – world premiere performances, major group pieces, solos and sensational performances, classics of film and music, glamor, punk, and the city’s hottest dance floors in the festival lounge in the vestibule of the Burgtheater.

Over the course of the festival, 54 companies will display their work on the city’s major stages, as well as at new performance venues such as the exterior of the Secession, museums, the rehearsal stages of the Burgtheater, and an additional 30 studios. This year, a special focus of the festival is dedicated to Jan Fabre, who opens the festival with his solo performance “I Am a Mistake” at the Leopold Museum on July 13. There, the special exhibition “STIGMATA – Actions & Performances 1976–2016,” covering Fabre’s 40 years of performance work, has been on display since June 6 and will run through August 27.

The ImPulsTanz 2017 festival includes a total of 31 Austrian premieres, among them works by Michael Laub, Cecilia Bengolea & François Chaignaud, Raimund Hoghe, Christian Rizzo, Germaine Acogny and Wim Vandekeybus. Also presented in Austria for the first time, the South African ballet shooting star Dada Masilo will show her latest production, “Giselle,” in the Volkstheater.

The collaborations with two museums in Vienna – the Leopold Museum and the mumok (Museum of Modern Art) – will continue this year.

The EU project “The Humane Body – ways of seeing dance,” which was launched last year and reaches its culmination this year, raises awareness for blind and vision-impaired people as an audience for contemporary dance and performance. The performances are designed for blind and vision-impaired as well as for sighted audiences.

Workshops and research 2017

This year’s ImPulsTanz program is comprised of 258 workshops and research projects which invite beginners and professionals, children, “Golden Agers,” people of all abilities and the curious to try their hand – or rather their feet – at parkour, ballet, yoga, Bollywood dance or Afro-fusion from July 17 through August 11. Fully 105 workshops are open for all beginning dance enthusiasts, regardless of any prior knowledge or experience. Some highlights are the “Summer of Movement” workshops in the main courtyard of the MuseumsQuartier – no advance registration or prior knowledge are necessary, and the workshops are free of charge.

You can find the Workshop Office in the MuseumsQuartier through July 7 (Monday–Friday 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM). Starting on July 10, the Workshop Office will be located in the Workshopzentrum Arsenal. (One of the box offices for tickets to the performances is also available in the MuseumsQuartier.) In addition to its wide variety of workshops, ImPulsTanz offers advanced and professionally active dancers and performance artists a select series of research projects. The research projects often consist of individual coaching, group experiments or intensive improvisation experiences that are stimulated by the project leaders.
